FIRSTS:
- Matthew made his National Hockey League debut on March 23, 2004, at Nassau Coliseum
in Long Island. Washington starter Olaf Kolzig was replaced
after allowing three goals on nineteen shots, and Yeats played the third period. Although
the Caps lost, Yeats was perfect in stopping all fourteen shots he faced.
- Matthew's first National Hockey League start came the next night at Philips Arena
in Atlanta. Although the Capitals lost, 3-2, Matthew was solid in making thirty saves.
- Matthew's first National Hockey League win came in his home debut, as the Capitals
hosted the Pittsburgh Penguins at the MCI Center on March 30, 2004. "It's a great feeling,"
said Yeats. "I counted down the last three seconds and gave myself a little fist pump.
I was cheering inside." Yeats made twenty-seven saves in the 4-2 victory, holding back
sustained Pittsburgh pressure in the third period including a five-minute power-play
when Washington's Darcy Verot was whistled for elbowing.
