- JUNIOR TEAM: Spokane (WHL), Lethbridge (WHL).
- SALARY (1997-98): $550,000
- STYLE:
- STRENGTHS:
- WEAKNESSES:
- HIS MASK: The mask McLennan unveiled at practice on December 10, 2003 featured all four members of his favourite
band - KISS - along with the Calgary skyline, with the Saddledome in the foreground, a large black Flaming C on top and his
No. 29 on the chin. McLennan, who designed it himself, also subtly placed the logo of another band along the jaw - "I'm
a huge KISS fan but I'm a big Nickelback fan and with them being local Alberta boys, I thought it would be nice to throw it
on there. I'm just showing support for the band." (Randy Sportak, Calgary Sun, December 11, 2003)
WHAT OTHERS ARE SAYING:
"McLennan, 25, comes in as the team's [St. Louis] No. 3 goalie, but depending
on Fuhr's recovery and [coach Mike] Keenan's whims, he
could end up as the regular. At the very least, he's the Blues' goalie of
the future." (The Sporting News Hockey Yearbook 1996-97, p. 94)
"A year ago, McLennan looked primed to take over for Fuhr when the veteran called it a career. Now that Fuhr
has announced he may retire, and Turek has been
acquired, McLennan's status is on shaky ground following a so-so campaign.
HE's had to battle through illness and being blocked by veteran netminders
his entire career. He needs to get his game back to the level it was at a year
ago. With Fuhr's imminent departure, McLennan needs to show the Blues they
still need him." (The Sports Forecaster 1999-2000, p. 169)
"Despite playing only 19 games, McLennan had a strong season with St. Louis
last year. Acquired in the expansion draft, he now has a chance to play
significantly more minutes. Is at the perfect age to flourish as a goaltender.
However, the letdown from playing behind the regular season champions to
playing for an expansion club is a dramatic one. Until further notice,
McLennan and Fernandez should share the bulk
of the load in Minnesota's inaugural season. The two former backups may battle
for playing time all season long." (The Sports Forecaster 2000-01, p.
182)
"While McLennan's numbers paled in comparison with those of
Manny Fernandez - especially in terms of overall
record - the veteran backstop had a solid season for the first-year Wild. He
was often the victim of offensive non-support but took it all in stride.
Over the years, he has proven to be an ideal backup netminder, one that
challenges the No. 1 guy but ultimately supports his teammate. Since McLennan
is three years older than Fernandez, the Wild will look to give the latter
more of an opportunity to become the No. 1 man between the pipes." (The
Sports Forecaster 2001-02, p. 188)
"McLennan seems to have landed in the right city. A former goaltending
mate of Roman Turek in St. Louis, and former player
under Greg Gilbert with Worcester, he'll prove to be a solid and
team-oriented backup as he makes his return to the NHL." (The Sports
Forecaster 2002-03, p. 167)
"The man known as 'Noodles' combines a wealth of experience with ideal
temperament to rank among the NHL's top backup goalkeepers. He won't
see a lot of action behind Roberto Luongo in
Florida, but he's good enough to give the latter more rest than he's used
to. McLennan is now with his sixth NHL organization." (The Sports
Forecaster 2005-06, p. 103)

DID YOU KNOW?
- Jamie wore #31 throughout juniors, but switched to #29 when he joined the New York Islanders, his first National Hockey League stop. Why? "Billy Smith," Jamie said of the former Islander star. "I always have to change because of other guys."
- Jamie wore #29 in every National Hockey League stop until he went to Calgary in 2002, where he chose #33. Why did he make the switch? Because he didn't want to wear the number (he thought) that Mike Vernon wore during his Flames career. "Out of respect, I didn't wear it. Then I realized he wore 30 in his Cup years," McLennan said. He then wanted to wear #31, but that was already taken by prospect Dany Sabourin.
