TWO-POINT QUESTION: On January 8, 1953, Glenn Hall recorded the first shutout of his career, a 4-0 blanking of the Boston Bruins. Which starting goaltender's injury gave Hall the opportunity to play the game?
CORRECT ANSWER: It was another Hall-of-Famer, Terry Sawchuk, whose injury allowed Hall the chance to start.

THREE-POINT QUESTION: Name the two goaltenders who met in the gold-medal game of the 1998 Nagano Winter Olympics.
CORRECT ANSWER: In the men's game, it was Dominik Hasek (Czech Republic) versus Mikhail Shtalenkov (Russia). For the women, it was Sarah Tueting (U.S.A.) versus Manon Rheaume (Canada).

FIVE-POINT QUESTION: Since the advent of the NHL Entry Draft in 1963, name the lowest-chosen (i.e. furthest from the start) goaltender to appear in a National Hockey League contest.
CORRECT ANSWER: Ryan Bach, who made his major-league debut this October, was drafted 262nd overall in 1992.

BONUS QUESTION: Name the goaltender who was the first to wear the number "0" in a National Hockey League contest.
CORRECT ANSWER: Paul Bibeault, who wore the zero for the Montreal Canadiens in the early 1940s.

GOALTENDER TRIVIA YEAR FIVE WEEK SIX (Answers due 10pm MST 11/13/98):

TWO-POINT QUESTION: These teammates rank first and second, respectively, in the number of (regular-season) NHL games played by a goaltender without a Stanley Cup championship. Name these netminders.
CORRECT ANSWER:The answer I was looking for was John Vanbiesbrouck (717 games played) and Ron Hextall (585), currently teammates with the Flyers. I did imply that I was looking for active netminders, although I awarded one bonus point to Tom Mascioli, who pointed out that Gilles Meloche (788) is the all-time leader, with Vanbiesbrouck second.

THREE-POINT QUESTION: Over the course of this goaltender's career, he suffered more than 200 stitches in his face, but he was a vocal critic of the facemask, saying "My face is my mask." Name this goaltender.
CORRECT ANSWER: This would be Lorne John "Gump" Worsley. Ironically, Gump's autobiography was to have the title "My Face Is My Mask", but his wife coerced him into wearing a mask for his final season.

FIVE-POINT QUESTION: In the early days of hockey, it was not uncommon for a position player (i.e. a non-goalie) to take a turn in goal, either due to a penalty (which goaltender served for many years) or an injury. With the advent of the two-goalie system, however, this practice has been gradually phased out. Name the last position player to play goal during an official NHL contest.
CORRECT ANSWER: On October 6, 1960, Boston Bruins netminder Don Simmons was injured in the final minute of play, and right wing Jerry Toppazzini filled in. The Bruins were defeated by the Chicago Black Hawks on that day, 5-2.

BONUS QUESTION: When Terry Sawchuk broke the NHL record for most career shutouts, he broke the mark of George Hainsworth, the great Habs goaltender. Whose mark did Hainsworth break when he set the record?
CORRECT ANSWER: Hainsworth recorded his 64th shutout on December 10, 1931, breaking the record of Detroit's Alex Connell, who was still active at the time. Hainsworth would end up with 94 blankings; Connell 81.

THREE-POINT QUESTION: Name the first goaltender to be selected in the 1998 NHL entry draft.
CORRECT ANSWER: Taken fourteenth overall by the Phoenix Coyotes was netminder Patrick Desrochers.

FIVE-POINT QUESTION: Name the goaltenders who participated in the first 0-0 double-shutout game in NHL history.
CORRECT ANSWER: On December 17, 1924, the Ottawa Senators and Hamilton Bulldogs battled to a 0-0 tie. In net, respectively, were Alex Connell and Jake Forbes.

BONUS QUESTION: In what year did NHL President Frank Calder mandate that league teams loan their spare goaltender to another team in the event of injury?
CORRECT ANSWER: The year was 1928.

CORRECT ANSWER: Roy "Shrimp" Worters, winner of the Hart Trophy in 1929.

THREE-POINT QUESTION: Last year (1997-98), a goaltender allowed seven goals in an NHL game six times, but one man yielded seven goals twice. Name him.
CORRECT ANSWER: Kirk McLean achieved this dubious distinction, both times with the Vancouver Canucks. The first was November 1, at Pittsburgh, and the second was December 9, at Detroit.

FIVE-POINT QUESTION: This Hall-of-Fame netminder began his career in Niagara Falls, a traumatic experience because he only spoke French. Never going out with the team after games, he would instead go to his room and listen to Mitch Miller records. Name him.
CORRECT ANSWER: Bernie Parent, who spent his first two pro seasons with the Niagara Falls Flyers (no relation to the Philadelphia Flyers; in fact, they weren't even around yet).

BONUS QUESTION: The 1936 Great Britain ice hockey team was the first to capture World, European, and Olympic championships in the same year. Name the netminder on that fantastic team.

BONUS QUESTION: In 1930, Clint Benedict became the first NHL goaltender to wear a mask. However, he again injured his nose and retired from the league. Name the goaltender that finished the season for his team.
CORRECT ANSWER: James "Flat" Walsh was the man who replaced Benedict for the Maroons. Walsh played three more seasons in Montreal before retiring.
