- GOALTENDER TRIVIA #3.19:
TWO-POINT QUESTION: Name the goaltender who graduated from "Kid Zero" to
"Mister Zero" over the course of his remarkable career.
CORRECT ANSWER: The Boston Bruins' mainstay, Frank Brimsek, was the
famous "Mister Zero", named for his proficiency at recording the shutout.
THREE-POINT QUESTION: Name the goaltender who recorded the National
Hockey League's first shutout.
CORRECT ANSWER: Various sources say Georges Vezina on this one, on
February 18, 1918; this one's being looked into.
FIVE-POINT QUESTION: The Pens' Kevin Stevens and Mario Lemieux were
the first teammates to reach the 50-goal plateau in the same game. Name the
lucky goaltender who faced the Penguins that night.
CORRECT ANSWER: The unfortunate netminder was Ron Tugnutt, then of the
Edmonton Oilers. For the record, the game was played in Cleveland.
- GOALTENDER TRIVIA #3.18:
TWO-POINT QUESTION: On "NHL Tonight" last week, Al Morganti incorrectly
stated that only two goaltenders (Jacques Plante and Al Rollins) had won the
Hart Trophy. Name the goaltender(s) whom Al forgot.
CORRECT ANSWER: Al Morganti forgot a total of two Hart-winning
goaltenders, those being Roy "Shrimp" Worters (1929 New York Americans) and
Charlie Rayner (1950 New York Rangers). You certainly can't complain of any
pro-New York bias from Al :-)
THREE-POINT QUESTION: As many of you well know, the Flyers won in
Pittsburgh last night for the first time in a long while. Name the
goaltenders of record the last time Philadelphis beat the Penguins in
Pittsburgh.
CORRECT ANSWER: The last time the Flyers won at the Igloo was November
21, 1990; Bruce Hoffort earned the victory, while Tom Barrasso took the loss.
Hoffort entered the game at 12:53 of the second period, after the Pens' Kevin
Stevens tripped and fell into starter Pete Peeters.
FIVE-POINT QUESTION: Drafted by the Red Wings in 1994, this goaltender
led his junior team to the Memorial Cup last season. Name him.
CORRECT ANSWER: Frederic Deschenes, drafted in 1994's fifth round by
Detroit,
was the Memorial Cup-winning goaltender last year.
- GOALTENDER TRIVIA #3.17:
TWO-POINT QUESTION: Who was the last goaltender to serve as captain of
their National Hockey League team?
CORRECT ANSWER: Ambidexterous Bill Durnan was the last goaltender to
serve as an N.H.L. captain, back in his days as a Canadien.
THREE-POINT QUESTION: This Buffalo Sabres goaltender, when asked why
he liked to wear thin leg pads, replied "because I like to feel the puck".
Name him.
CORRECT ANSWER: "Dandy" Don Edwards was the Buffalo Sabres goaltender
who liked to feel the puck.
FIVE-POINT QUESTION: Over the course of the 1980's, name the only N.H.L.
goaltender to face two penalty shots in the same game, and the number of goals
he yielded on those penalty shots.
CORRECT ANSWER: There were actually two possible answers to this one -
thanks again to Liam Maguire and Patrick Houda - and both happened to be Red
Wings. On February 11, 1982 (this is one I spaced out on), Gilles Gilbert
allowed penalty shot goals from both Thomas Gradin and Ivan Hlinka. Four
years later, on February 16, 1986, Corrado Micalef stopped penalty shots from
both Pierre Larouche and Mike Ridley.
- GOALTENDER TRIVIA #3.16:
TWO-POINT QUESTION: Colorado's Patrick Roy secured his 336th career
N.H.L. victory on Sunday, which moved him into seventh place all-time. Whom
did he pass on this list?
CORRECT ANSWER: It was Gump Worsley who was bumped down the leader
boards when Patrick Roy moved into eighth place (see above) on the all-time
N.H.L. victory list.
THREE-POINT QUESTION: In December of 1993, this goaltender became the
first in the modern era to record four shutouts in one month. Name him.
CORRECT ANSWER: The Dominator, Dominik Hasek, shut out Tampa Bay,
Hartford, Los Angeles, and Montreal for his four shutouts in December 1993.
FIVE-POINT QUESTION: As many of you know, Vladislav Tretiak and Vladimir
Myshkin shared duties for the U.S.S.R. in the "Miracle on Ice" 1980 Olympic
semi-final game. Who was the Finnish goaltender who faced the Americans in
the final?
CORRECT ANSWER: In the game that would earn the U.S. of A. the
gold-medal, they squared off against the great #19, Jorma Valtonen.
