TWO-POINT QUESTION: Amongst current National Hockey League goaltenders,
name the all-time leader in regular-season victories.
CORRECT ANSWER: The Toronto Maple Leafs' Ed Belfour had 452 victories
at the time the question was posed. He has a pretty sizeable lead on
contemporaries Curtis Joseph and
Martin Brodeur.
THREE-POINT QUESTION: In a situation that might remind you of the famed
Lester Patrick, this assistant coach tended his American Hockey League
team's goal this past week. Name him.
CORRECT ANSWER: On December 28, Albany River Rats assistant coach
Chris
Terreri played the first and third periods of his club's game against
Hershey. Terreri stopped 27 of 31 shots in the 4-2 loss, despite not playing
professionally in more than fifty-four months.
FIVE-POINT QUESTION: Before it happened to Vitaly Kolesnik and
Curtis Joseph in their game on December 26, name the last time in National
Hockey League history where both starting goaltenders were replaced by their
backups during the first period of the game.
CORRECT ANSWER: The date was January 2, 2003. After allowing four goals
on just seven shots, Atlanta goaltender Byron Dafoe was pulled at 12:03
of the first period in favour of Milan Hnilicka. Barely one minute later,
Ottawa starter Martin Prusek injured his groin and was forced to vacate
his position. Patrick Lalime filled in for the Sens in an eventual 8-1
win over the Thrashers.
PICTORAL QUESTION: Name the following goaltender:

CORRECT ANSWER: Yes, it's Chris Terreri once again! Several pointed
out defenseman Bruce Driver in the background of this photo of Terreri,
who was a member of New Jersey's 1995 Stanley Cup-winning team.
TWO-POINT QUESTION: As of January 8, which 2005-06 National Hockey League
team has seen more goaltenders guarding their net than any other?
CORRECT ANSWER: CORRECT ANSWER: The Atlanta Thrashers have used five netminders during this
season - Kari Lehtonen, Mike Dunham,
Michael Garnett, Adam Berkhoel and
Steve Shields. The St. Louis Blues and Pittsburgh Penguins have both
dressed five goaltenders this year, although only four have played (extra
thanks to Tom Mascioli and Bryan McCready for noting this).
THREE-POINT QUESTION: There are currently twenty-seven goaltenders
enshrined in the Hockey Hall of Fame (including only those who were
prominent goaltenders, but not those - such as Lester Patrick - whose
goaltending was only a small part of their legend). Of those, only
one was born in the United States. Name him.
CORRECT ANSWER: The pride of Eveleth, Minnesota, Frank Brimsek was known
as "Mr. Zero" in his ten-year National Hockey League career, most of which
was spent with the Bruins. If you don't know about Brimsek's storied rookie
season, you're in for a real treat.
FIVE-POINT QUESTION: Surrounding the league's Christmas break, Atlanta's
Michael Garnett recorded consecutive shutouts in wins over New Jersey and
Montreal. Prior to Garnett, name the last Atlanta-based NHL goaltender to
record back-to-back shutouts.
CORRECT ANSWER: Way back on November 1, 1978, the Atlanta Flames'
Dan Bouchard stopped forty shots in a 3-0 victory
over the Philadelphia Flyers.
Two nights later, Bouchard earned a second whitewashing, with twenty-five
saves in a 2-0 win over the Pittsburgh Penguins.
PICTORAL QUESTION: Name the following goaltender:

CORRECT ANSWER: This one felled more people than I thought it would - this
is 2003 Hall of Fame inductee Grant Fuhr. Fuhr spent ninety-five games
with Toronto; here he appears in Toronto's NHL 75th anniversary sweater.
TWO-POINT QUESTION: Name the goaltenders involved the last time in which
the National Hockey League awarded the Vezina Trophy to multiple goaltenders
in the same season.
CORRECT ANSWER: Back in 1980-81, the Vezina was still awarded using a very
simple formula - goaltender(s) on the team allowing the fewest goals. And
in this year, the Montreal Canadiens had three goaltenders share in the
glory - Denis Herron,
Michel Larocque, and
Richard Sevigny.
THREE-POINT QUESTION: Name the goaltender who recently appeared in a National Hockey League game despite suffering from multiple sclerosis. CORRECT ANSWER: The Providence Bruins' Jordan Sigalet, who made news of his condition public on December 11, 2004. While on recall to the Boston club this year, Jordan replaced Andrew Raycroft on January 7 and played the final 0:43 in a 6-3 defeat.
FIVE-POINT QUESTION: In the early 1980s, the Calgary Flames set a
National Hockey League record by going 264 consecutive games without
being shut out. Which goaltender finally broke the streak?
CORRECT ANSWER: The Quebec Nordiques and
Richard Sevigny blanked Calgary
by a 4-0 score on January 11, 1985, with Sevigny making nineteen saves
to preserve the shutout.
PICTORAL QUESTION: Name the following goaltender:

CORRECT ANSWER: This one was a tough one - it's one-time Chicago prospect
Jim Waite, here appearing in the club's 1991-92 media guide. I believe this
shot to be taken from Waite's 9-6 victory over the St. Louis Blues on
December 20, 1989.
TWO-POINT QUESTION: In a recent poll of sixty-five National Hockey League
netminders, who was chosen as the best goaltender in the NHL this season?
CORRECT ANSWER: Dominik Hasek (17 votes) narrowly beat out
Miikka Kiprusoff (16 votes) for this honour.

THREE-POINT QUESTION: Name the last goaltender to win a major National
Hockey League award on a team for which he was not currently a member.
CORRECT ANSWER: This one has two correct answers, depending on how you
interpret the question. In 2003, Roman Cechmanek shared the Jennings
Trophy as a member of the Philadelphia Flyers; however, he had been traded
to the Los Angeles Kings the previous month.
A more interesting answer is Michel Larocque, who was one of three winners of the 1981 Vezina Trophy with the Montreal Canadiens. Larocque had been traded to Toronto in March of that year, and had played ten games for the Maple Leafs at the time the Vezina was awarded, but had played enough games for Montreal to qualify as a co-winner.
FIVE-POINT QUESTION: One of the few World Hockey Association goaltenders
to use a curved stick, this netminder was the all-time leader in WHA
scoring among goalies. Name him.
CORRECT ANSWER: Don McLeod, who not only
leads this category, but dominates
it to a remarkable extent. McLeod registered forty-three assists in six
WHA seasons, more than 200% more than the #2-scoring netminder.
PICTORAL QUESTION: Name the following goaltender:

CORRECT ANSWER: Many of you know this person as a colour commentator - this
is Glenn "Chico" Resch,
who toiled in relative obscurity for much of his
NHL career, but did win a Stanley Cup with the 1980 Islanders (not pictured).
TWO-POINT QUESTION: Among goaltenders who are undefeated in shootouts over
their National Hockey League career, name the one with the greatest number
of shootout victories (as of January 29).
CORRECT ANSWER: The Dallas Stars' Marty Turco has won all six of the
shootouts in which he has participated this season, stopping 13 of
16 attempts in the process (including the first nine). Turco has also
stopped all three penalty shots he has faced this year! It might have
something to do with being able to practice daily against Jussi Jokinen
(who has scored on all eight of his shootout attempts this year).
THREE-POINT QUESTION: Penalty shots are more prevalent under the new
rules enforcement in the National Hockey League. Name the goaltender who
faced penalty shots in three consecutive NHL games this season.
CORRECT ANSWER: Olaf Kolzig of the Washington Capitals faced penalty
shots on January 19 (Mike Sillinger), January 21 (Erik Cole) and
January 25 (Ryan Malone) - of the three, only Sillinger was stopped.
Also of significance is Craig Anderson's performance - he faced three
penalty shots in two consecutive games this year.
FIVE-POINT QUESTION: Who holds the National Hockey League record for most
consecutive postseason victories?
CORRECT ANSWER: Tom Barrasso of the Pittsburgh Penguins won his final
eleven postseason games in 1992, and picked up where he left off with
wins in the first three games the following spring. For those of you
counting, that's fourteen consecutive wins! Chris Terreri and the New
Jersey Devils finally stopped the march, on April 25, 1993.
PICTORAL QUESTION: Name all three of the following goaltenders:

CORRECT ANSWER: These were the Las Vegas Thunder goaltenders at the start
of the 1994-95 International Hockey League season - from left to right,
Pokey Reddick,
Clint Malarchuk and
Manon Rheaume.
