Goaltender Trivia accomplished this goal, and also helped to increase the awareness of goaltenders in hockey cultures. Hopefully I will never again have to correct someone who says that Jacques Plante wore the first mask in the National Hockey League, or that Gump Worsley wore the last.
Originally, I would send out one question per day; currently, I send out four questions per week, one of which is a pictorial question.
Historically, there have never been "prizes" awarded to Goaltender Trivia champions - I was an undergraduate when I started the contest back in 1994, and seven years of graduate school did nothing to improve my financial situation. What I can offer is a public presence and notoriety, and the satisfaction of a job well-done. That usually seems to be more than enough for most of the players; however, if you'd like to donate goaltender-related (or just hockey-related) items for future prizes, I'd welcome them and add you to my "thank yous".
During what would have been Goaltender Trivia's ninth year, 2002-03, I had finally completed my doctorate in mathematics and was spending so much time teaching, coaching and looking for work that I felt it would be a disservice to the many eager participants if I did a poor job. The next stoppage in play coincided with the aborted 2004-05 NHL season. However, Goaltender Trivia is finally back for its tenth season, and I'm hoping that you'll play!
