WHAT OTHERS ARE SAYING:

"Volkov was outstanding for the gold medal-winning Russian team at the World Junior Championship. "He's a dedicated kid with a great work ethic," [Los Angeles director of amateur scouting Al] Murray said. "Hockey's his only priority. (Goaltending coach) Don Edwards loved working with this kid." Volkov's only drawback is a tendency to let in the occasional soft goal, but Murray said that was a factor said that was a factor of concentration, not technique, and could easily be corrected." (The Hockey News Future Watch 1999)

"Likely to be a backup to Jamie Storr in the future, Volkov has great potential. A stand-up goalie with a quick glove hand, Volkov is small in size, but loves to challenge shooters. Quick, he needs to work on his five hole. Starred for Russia at the WJC." (The Sports Forecaster 1999-2000, p. 206)

"His size (6-foot-1, 185 pounds) makes Volkov a big target in goal and he's mobile and quick. The Kings have sent goaltending consultant Don Edwards to Halifax to work with him and they like how receptive Volkov is to learning. They also appreciate his work ethic and believe he can refine his technique as needed. "We like him a lot; we think he has a very good future," [Los Angeles director of player personnel Bill] O'Flaherty said. "He has all the potential to be an NHL goaltender." Volkov is under contract." (The Hockey News Future Watch 2000)

"The team's top prospect despite being solid at the goaltending position. Has continued to show solid progress after another good season with Halifax of the QMJHL. Also had an excellent showing at the world junior championships. This stand-up goalie will be given plenty of time to mature in the farm system. Should have a bright future." (The Sports Forecaster 2000-01, p. 203)

"No room on the farm so he wound up in ECHL. Hope is waning, but not lost." (Matt McHale, The Hockey News Future Watch 2001)

"Volkov struggled in his first pro season. He was bombed in the AHL but put up decent numbers in the ECHL. His stock has dropped but he still has the raw ability to turn it around." (The Sports Forecaster 2001-02, p. 209)

"Volkov returned to Russia and enjoyed some success, being named to the all-star team and recording a 2.17 goals-against average. He showed up in the big games and it looks like his development is back on track. The question now is whether Volkov will return to North America anytime soon." (The Sports Forecaster 2002-03, p. 203)
