WHAT OTHERS ARE SAYING:

"Last February [1994], [Montreal GM Serge] Savard obtained veteran Ron Tugnutt from Anaheim for forward Stephan Lebeau, but Tugnutt didn't perform up to expectations in the eight regular-season games and one playoff game in which he appeared. Management, however, is confident that he'll be an effective backup this year." (The Sporting News 1994-95 Hockey Yearbook, p. 53)

"Armed with a new three-year contract, playoff hero Ron Tugnutt is set to come into camp to push starter Damian Rhodes for the No. 1 job. While Rhodes missed 28 games at the end of the regular season and the playoffs with an ankle injury, Tugnutt stole the show by leading the club through the post season." (The Hockey News 1997-98 Yearbook, p. 143)

"Tugnutt only became the starting goaltender in Ottawa because of Damien Rhodes' poor play. Rhodes should regain his confidence this season and once again be the No. 1 goalie." (The Sports Forecaster Hockey '97-'98, p. 40)

"[Ottawa had the] Third-worst collective save percentage in the league. When Tugnutt is your masked hero, you've got to be concerned - nothing against Tugger, and it would make for a nice bedtime story if the NHL's Player of the Month for April would prove to be for real. We just doubt it." (The Sports Forecaster Hockey '97-'98, p. 95)

"Winning the No. 1 job in a big-league city in the heat of a playoff race and being voted as NHL's Player of the Month for April with more shutouts (three) in 10 days than he had in his entire NHL career was the Hollywood-like story of Ron Tugnutt last season!" (The Sports Forecaster Hockey '97-'98, p. 98)

"He's a guy who moves around in his crease a lot, and he can play an angle on you very well. He's obviously very much improved in his game over his earlier days. He was the reason we went to the playoffs last year." (Alexandre Daigle, ESPN Sportszone, April 1998)

"Had a career year after a serious boating accident the preceding summer. Led the NHL with a 1.79 goals against average and posted a .925 save percentage. Tied his career high with three shutouts. Can he do it again? Tugnutt had an incredible run last season and was rewarded with a trip to the All-Star game when Toronto's Curtis Joseph went down with a groin injury. He became the club's undisputed No. 1 goalie when Damian Rhodes was dealt to the expansion Atlanta Thrashers following the season. Will be very hard pressed to equal his numbers of '98-99." (The Sports Forecaster 1999-2000, p. 89)

"Each season, Tugnutt must prove himself all over again despite a fairly solid resume. After being traded from Ottawa to Pittsburgh at the trade deadline, he played exceptionally well in the playoffs last year. The knock on Tugnutt is his lack of consistency, although he displays flashes of Hasek-like dominance in stretches. While he may not be a great No. 1 netminder, Tugnutt is an outstanding backup. In fact, his best situation is as part of a tag team, much like his days in Ottawa." (The Sports Forecaster 2000-01, p. 146)

"Tugnutt raised several eyebrows when he signed a multi-year deal with Columbus last summer. However, he answered the bell with authority, earning an NHL record for most victories (22) by an expansion goaltender. The 33-year-old veteran has the perfect attitude for a No. 1 goaltender on a young franchise. Tugnutt understands that Marc Denis represents the future of the Blue Jackets. Rather than alienate his competition, Tugnutt works well in tandem - while showing a burning desire to maintain his status as long as possible. There are few teammates that can match the "Tugger" in terms of sportsmanship and exemplary team play. To cap it off, he's still playing at a high level that began in Ottawa in 1996-97. It was pretty much a 50/30 games split between Tugnutt and Denis in 2000-01. This season, the duo may share equally. However, there is no denying Tugnutt as a true professional and a major asset to the Blue Jackets' cause." (The Sports Forecaster 2001-02, p. 152)

"Veteran Tugnutt's 2001-02 numbers were down from his first season with Columbus but he still managed to register his sixth consecutive sub-3.00 goals-against average. He has always longed for the opportunity to be a starter in the NHL but is perfect for sharing the workload with youth. While undersized, Tugnutt never quits on a play and has learned how to be in good position more often than not. The Blue Jackets dealt Tugnutt in order to give youngster Marc Denis the starting gig. Tugnutt keeps things tidy when called upon but is heading into 2002-03 as Marty Turco's backup." (The Sports Forecaster 2002-03, p. 198)

"Wherever he goes, the affable Tugnutt is an instant favorite with fans and teammates alike. He always puts the team first, and gives 100 per cent on the ice. At this stage of his career, Tugnutt is sought primarily for his intangible qualities. If he doesn't find a taker, he will retire." (The Sports Forecaster 2005-06, p. 105)
