Cody made his National Hockey League debut, and registered his first League victory, on Thursday, October 24, 2002, when his St. Louis Blues defeated the hometown Edmonton Oilers, 2-1. Starter Curtis Sanford suffered an ankle injury midway through the second period, with the Blues down, 1-0. Rudkowsky came in, and stopped all ten shots he faced as St. Louis recovered for the win. "I saw the ref talking to Curtis and it looked like they were pointing at his pad or his skate," Rudkowsky said. "I thought maybe he lost an edge and, all of a sudden, the ref comes up to me and says, 'You gotta go, you gotta get in there.'" "I was always an Oiler fan growing up - Grant Fuhr, Andy Moog, Bill Ranford, Curtis Joseph...for me, just growing up an hour away from this building, it's awesome just to get out there on the Coliseum ice and play."
