- Earl's National Hockey League debut came in the 1937 Stanley Cup playoffs, replacing Detroit's injured starter Norm Smith. He would lead the Wings to the Stanley Cup.
- In the 1937 Stanley Cup playoffs, Earl stopped the first penalty shot ever awarded during Stanley Cup play, turning back the New York Rangers' Alex Shibicky on April 15, 1937.
- On November 4, 1937, Earl recorded a shutout for the New York Americans in his National Hockey League regular-season debut, blanking the Chicago Black Hawks 3-0.
- Earl was the winning goaltender in the inaugural American Hockey League All-Star Game, February 3, 1942.
