WHAT OTHERS ARE SAYING:

"Assuming [Boston] resigns Group II free agent Bill Ranford, he'll be the No. 1 guy in 1996-97. He started 40 of Boston's final 41 games last season after being acquired from Edmonton and registered career-highs in both games played (77) and wins (34). [Bruins coach Steve] Kasper will play Ranford nearly every game he can." (The Sporting News Hockey Yearbook 1996-97, p. 40)

"If all else fails, he can still save [the Bruins'] season." (ESPN Hockey 96, p. 79)

"Washington made the move to get veteran Bill Ranford from the Boston Bruins because he is a proven winner. Now Ranford gets the chance to perform behind one of the better defenses in the league. Ranford will be the No. 1 goalie...Ranford appeared in 77 games as recently as two seasons ago, but with an experienced and improving backup in Kolzig, that won't be necessary." (The Hockey News 1997-98 Yearbook, p. 181)

"Bill Ranford stepped in after the Jim Carey bust, but an 88.7 save percentage just won't cut it on a defense-first formation of this caliber." (The Sports Forecaster Hockey '97-'98, p. 145)

"One of the most overrated goalies. We have to recognize the 12-year veteran has kept goal for some bad teams, but Ranford has never posted a save percentage of over .900 in any given season." (The Sports Forecaster Hockey '97-'98, p. 148)

"I played with him in the World Championships and he was a guy that would always make you look at him because he was making a spectacular kind of save. He's a very acrobatic goaltender, so he's difficult for you to figure where to(shoot) on him." (Rod Brind'Amour, ESPN Sportszone, April 1998)
