WHAT OTHERS ARE SAYING:

"Osgood is among the quickest in the NHL going from side-to-side, which compensates for a lack of size." (The Sporting News Hockey Yearbook 1996-97, p. 89)

"His 39 victories were best in the league. Hasn't proven he's a playoff goalie." (ESPN Hockey 96, p. 93)

"Osgood posts all-world stats mainly because of the tight defensive system, but [Detroit coach Scotty] Bowman doesn't really like him." (The Sports Forecaster Hockey '97-'98, p. 165)

"Ozzie's not as big as the other top goalies -- Roy, Hasek, Belfour. He's a little guy who relies on his quickness. He's stymied me plenty but if I had a breakaway on him, I'd either try to go upstairs with the shot, because he isn't that big, or take him wide on a deke. He's fast, no question, but a lot of goalies don't have to move as far, as quickly, to cover the same type of area." (Doug Weight, ESPN Sportszone, April 1998)

"Just when Osgood appeared to have silenced the critics, along comes 1998-99. Though he was injured in the playoffs, Osgood still was not up to the challenge when he was needed most. Still relatively young, time may be on Osgood's side. When on his game, Osgood is confident and always in perfect position. If he can bounce back, this time he may be able to solidify this team's only major weakness." (The Sports Forecaster 1999-2000, p. 159)

"Despite one Stanley Cup ring as the starting goaltender and four 30-win seasons in the NHL, Osgood is still not mentioned among the elite goaltenders in the league. The much-maligned "Ozzie" had a shaky regular season but was spectacular in the 2000 postseason. You think he'd put together a complete season one of these days. Despite the ongoing calls for his head, he's still a fixture with the Wings. Ideally, Osgood shouldn't play more than 50 games a season." (The Sports Forecaster 2000-01, p. 151)

"For the second consecutive season, Osgood exorcised his postseason demons. Unfortunately, it came on the heels of a mediocre regular season by his standards. The eight-year veteran's games played, wins and shutout totals were down in 2000-01 from the previous season, while his goals-against average and save percentage went up. Osgood struggled early on in Detroit last year and even lost the starting job to Manny Legace for a brief period. His only main flaw is the propensity to give up bad goals now and again. At press time, Osgood was a No. 1 goaltender without a starting job due to the arrival of Dominik Hasek. While he isn't considered an elite goaltender, Osgood could be a solid acquisition for several aspiring playoff contenders." (The Sports Forecaster 2001-02, p. 157)

"After eight seasons in Detroit, Osgood was claimed by the Islanders in the waiver draft and was a major part of bringing the winning tradition back to Long Island. Despite a couple of bad stretches, he posted solid numbers across the board and reached the 30-win mark for the fifth time in his career. He was a godsend on a team searching for an identity. However, critical errors in pressure situations continue to mar his career. Entering the final year of his contract, Osgood can't let up for a minute with Rick DiPietro knocking on the door." (The Sports Forecaster 2002-03, p. 94)

"Apparently, you can go home again. Just ask Osgood, who returns to the Winged Wheel after three seasons split between the Islanders and Blues. Osgood averaged 49 appearances during his first eight-year stint with the Wings, but he'll have to fight for his playing time this time around. He's challenge Manny Legace." (The Sports Forecaster 2005-06, p. 103)
