Name pronounced LEH-guh-see.
WHAT OTHERS ARE SAYING:
"Has begun to play well after good camp, slow start in AHL." (Jeff Jacobs,
The Hockey News Future Watch 1995)
"Legace finally enjoyed his first full season in the NHL last year.
He outplayed Ken Wregget to win the
backup job and even challenged former No. 1 man
Chris Osgood. In 14 less appearances,
the 5-9 162-pounder was only one win shy of Osgood's total of 25
and actually registered one more shutout than his Motown rival.
Furthermore, Legace's goals-against average (2.05) placed him
second overall and his save percentage (.920) was good for
seventh in the league." (The Sports Forecaster 2001-02, p. 157)
"The Red Wings love Legace even if they don't show it with more playing
time. His stable demeanor and ability to play at a high level after periods
of inactivity make him an ideal backup netminder. He has played behind both
Chris Osgood and Dominik
Hasek with the Wings and adjusted his game accordingly. Legace's heart
and determination make up for his lack of size. Hasek's retirement shouldn't
have much impact on Legace's playing time. The 29-year-old will likely
appear in 30 games in 2002-03, which is what he has averaged in his first two
seasons in Motown." (The Sports Forecaster 2002-03, p. 151)
"Once upon a time in Detroit, Legace backed up Chris
Osgood. Now, the roles may be reversed in Legace enjoys a strong
training camp. Legace has always been a solid backup in Detroit, but has failed
to prove his mettle as the starter whenever called upon. That must change for
him to beat out Osgood." (The Sports Forecaster 2005-06, p. 102)

FIRSTS:
- Manny made his first National Hockey League postseason start on April 7, 2004, when the Detroit
Red Wings hosted the Nashville Predators at Joe Louis Arena, and he had to deal with some obstacles
in order to earn his first career playoff win. First, Nashville's Adam Hall scored in a pileup
just sixteen seconds in. Less than two minutes later, the Predators' Steve Sullivan was awarded a
penalty shot - fortunately for Legace, Sullivan shot wide of the net after Legace forced him to cut
across to the goaltender's blocker side. In the third period, the Wings scored three times to take
home the 3-1 win - Manny's first. Legace made twenty-three saves, but downplayed his performance
arfterwards: "Just because we won one game doesn't mean we're going to win the Stanley Cup. It's
a long road."
PENALTY SHOTS:
- Stopped penalty shot (Steve Sullivan), April 7, 2004 [postseason].
- Stopped penalty shot (Nils Ekman), February 28, 2006.
