Koskinen made his National Hockey League debut on February 8, 2011, at Nassau Coliseum. With the Islanders facing a run of goaltender injuries, Koskinen was called up to back up Kevin Poulin, and when Poulin injured his left knee during warmups prior to the team's game against Toronto, Koskinen got the call. Koskinen's NHL career got off to a rocky start. Armstrong's snap shot from the right circle and Jay Rosehill's perfect deflection of Luke Schenn's harmless-looking shot from the right point 6:31 into the game gave the Leafs two goals on two shots and a 2-0 lead. The Islanders managed to tie the game at two, but the Leafs pulled away to win by a 5-3 margin.
