WHAT OTHERS ARE SAYING:

"[St. Louis general manager Larry] Pleau wasn't too crazy about the idea of the Blues using a third round pick to acquire Johnson from the Colorado Avalanche before his arrival as GM, but the lanky 6-foot-4, 191-pound goalie has earned Pleau's praise. "He's a surprise for me, he's had a good year," Pleau said. "I guess I happened to see the bad games when I went to see him last year (in Owen Sound), but he played well in camp. His best assets are his size, his quickness and his competitiveness." (Dave Luecking, The Hockey News Future Watch 1998)

"Plays well every year in camp, but hasn't been able to parlay that into permanent duty." (Dave Luecking, The Hockey News Future Watch 1999)

"Played six games with St. Louis last season and looked comfortable. Has shown both flashes of brilliance and inexperience in his pro career thus far. A butterfly-style goalie, big Johnson also handles the puck well. Roman Turek's acquisition spells trouble for him." (The Sports Forecaster 1999-2000, p. 169)

"At one point last season, it looked as if Johnson might ascend to the Blues' No. 1 goaltending job, but the Blues didn't want to rush the 23-year-old and acquired Roman Turek to do the job. Johnson has thrived in the minors, helped by his positive attitude. [St. Louis assistant GM John] Ferguson [Jr.] said that Johnson "has been good all year." However, Johnson is at a crossroads with the team and the Blues must decide whether to protect him in the expansion draft or expose him along with current backup Jamie McLennan." (Dave Luecking, The Hockey News Future Watch 2000)

"With Jamie McLennan now in Minnesota, Johnson will be given every opportunity to battle Roloson for the backup job this season. A big goalie, Johnson covers a lot of the net and possesses a quick glove hand. Coming off an exceptional playoff run with Worcester of the AHL." (The Sports Forecaster 2000-01, p. 161)

"An outstanding rookie season in 2000-01, during which he finished fifth in the NHL in goals-against average, has given Johnson a legitimate shot at the No. 1 job between the pipes. He has good size and a quick glove hand. His poise under pressure masks his lack of experience and could place him front and center when the postseason rolls around. The Blues would not have dealt Roman Turek to Calgary in the off-season if they weren't confident in the 24-year-old goalkeeper. It's now up to Johnson to grab a stranglehold on the starting job." (The Sports Forecaster 2001-02, p. 167)

"The Blues stood by their word and stuck with Johnson as their No. 1 goalie last season after dealing Roman Turek. Johnson rewarded their faith in the regular season and raised his game to another level in the postseason. Despite a .500 record, Johnson recorded three shutouts and a 1.83 goals-against average in 10 playoff games. The fourth-year pro has great size and a tremendous glove hand. While outstanding at handling the puck, he must now learn to pick his spots better. There is no longer any debate in St. Louis as far as the team's goaltending is concerned. This is now clearly Johnson's team." (The Sports Forecaster 2002-03, p. 161)

"The Blues and Coyotes both cut bait with Johnson in a one-year span, which has placed the 28-year-old's career at a crossroads. The butterfly goalie owns good size and technique, but tends to be streaky. Furthermore, his mental toughness has come into question on more than one occasion. Johnson must bounce back." (The Sports Forecaster 2005-06, p. 101)
