WHAT OTHERS ARE SAYING:

"American World Junior goalie has made great progress, but isn't considered No. 1 material for NHL." (Bob McManaman, The Hockey News Future Watch 1998)

"His stock has soared, perhaps more than anyone's. Esche recently made his first NHL start in Boston and looked respectable in two relief appearances behind Khabibulin. It looked as though Esche would finish the season in Phoenix when the Coyotes put Jimmy Waite on waivers. But the acquisition of Mikhail Shtalenkov from Edmonton March 11 relegated Esche back to prospect status. An AHL all-star this season, Esche jumped ahead of Langkow in pecking order, though the Coyotes like Langkow's long-term potential better." (Bob McManaman, The Hockey News Future Watch 1999)

"A stand-up netminder with no major weakness, Esche plays a solid all-around game. Voted an all-rookie team member at the AHL level, he needs to have another solid season in hopes of eventually making it to Phoenix. Already has some NHL experience and will be ready to make the jump when the Coyotes come howling." (The Sports Forecaster 1999-2000, p. 210)

"He's one of the finest pure athletes in the organization and can stop pucks, too." (Bob McManaman, The Hockey News Future Watch 2000)

"The American goalkeeper may not have the physique of fellow prospect Patrick DesRochers nor the similar can't-miss label. But what Esche does possess is a strong chance of starting the 2000-2001 season in the NHL. Got into eight games with the Coyotes last season. His long-term potential is as a backup, however. It's Esche's time to step up and play a bigger part in Phoenix." (The Sports Forecaster 2000-01, p. 208)

"The Coyotes' backup goaltender had a fine season in 2000-01 but, since he has never dominated at any level, may not develop into anything more than a second-string netminder in the NHL. Esche has good size, plays the angles well and controls his rebounds. Since he's only 23, it's difficult to tell where his career will take him. However, he has made steady progress in his first three professional seasons and there is no reason to think he won't continue to develop. Esche will attempt to fend off Patrick DesRochers for the backup role this season. Down the line, the youngsters will be battling for Sean Burke's starting role in Phoenix." (The Sports Forecaster 2001-02, p. 214)

"Esche suffered a major setback last season and was promptly shipped to Philadelphia in the off-season Brian Boucher deal. The 24-year-old is one of only a handful of stand-up goalies left in the NHL. He's sharp with his angles and gives up few juicy rebounds. However, his brief career has been marred by inconsistency. The backup job in Philadelphia won't be handed to Esche but he clearly has the inside track. He still has time to develop into a steady second stringer but may not have enough talent to win a starting gig." (The Sports Forecaster 2002-03, p. 104)

"Even when the Flyers were winning games in 2003-04, including an extended Stanley Cup run, Esche often seemed to be fighting the puck. Since then, he has improved his confidence level thanks to a strong performance for Team U.S.A. at the 2004 World Cup of Hockey. Now, he must fend off the promising Antero Niittymaki." (The Sports Forecaster 2005-06, p. 100)

HOW HE GOT THE NICKNAME "CHICO":

"My sticks say R. Esche," explained [Esche], "and everybody knows the great Glenn (Chico) Resch. Keith [Tkachuk, captain of the Phoenix Coyotes] saw my sticks and said, 'When the bleep did Chico get here?'" The name has stuck. (Dick Chubey, The Edmonton Sun, October 23, 2000)
