WHAT OTHERS ARE SAYING:

"Dafoe was an AHL first-team all-star with the Calder Cup-winning Pirates last season, was brought up to the Capitals late in the season when injuries sidelined others and did very well. He is currently with the Phoenix Roadrunners of the International League." (Dave Fay, The Hockey News Future Watch 1995)

"He's really quick. But he's more of a reflex goalie than anything. But I've known him since junior and he's really proven that he's a good enough goalie to be here." (Bill Lindsay, ESPN Sportszone, April 1998)

"A late bloomer, "Lord Byron" was a Vezina Trophy finalist last season. His good regular season was tempered by a somewhat disappointing playoff series against Buffalo, where he failed to make the key save when the team needed it. A very focused goaltender who comes to play every night. Realizes that with his defensive corps, all he has to do is make the first save. As a result, he gambles and will come way out of the net to challenge the shooter. Tremendous reflexes. He's still the No. 1 man in Boston and will get a ton of playing time." (The Sports Forecaster 1999-2000, p. 73)

"Couldn't match his Vezina Trophy-finalist status from '98-99, possibly because he felt the effects of his early-season contract holdout. A late-season knee injury also didn't help. An aggressive and athletic butterfly-style puck stopper, Dafoe has chalked up 20 shutouts in his career thus far. Trade rumors surrounded him last season. Dafoe will want to bounce back with a vengeance after his worst campaign in Beantown. Youngster John Grahame is pushing hard." (The Sports Forecaster 2000-01, p. 63)

"When Dafoe's knee was healthy enough to withstand the rogirs of the NHL last season, the Bruins were eight games over .500. With the No. 1 netminder out of the lineup, Boston went 10 games under the break-even mark. This underlines just how important the nine-year veteran is to the Bruins' success. Dafoe enjoyed a career year in 1998-99, then began to have knee problems. Subsequently, it has cost Boston two consecutive playoff berths. There is no questioning Dafoe's ability to play at an all-star level when healthy. However, his wonky knee has given Bruins management the impetus to look for more help between the pipes. If Dafoe is healthy, he'll start between 60 and 65 games for the first time in three seasons." (The Sports Forecaster 2001-02, p. 65)

"The veteran netminder didn't help his own cause, not to mention that of the Boston Bruins, with his sub-par playoff performance in 2001-02. Despite seeing very few shots, he was unable to get the job done against the Canadiens. Nevertheless, Dafoe has proven capable of being a reliable No. 1 goalkeeper when healthy. He is also comfortable playing in front of an offensive team, which is rare in today's NHL. However, his playoff record isn't stellar." (The Sports Forecaster 2002-03, p. 216)

"Granted, Dafoe struggled to regain the form that saw him win 35 games as a Bruin the season before. Injuries limited him to 17 games, and he finished with mediocre numbers. However, Dafoe did not need offseason surgery for his nagging groin injuries and is reported to be in the best shape of his career." (The Sporting News Hockey Yearbook 2003-04, p. 24)

"After two sub-par seasons in Atlanta, Dafoe was cut loose and didn't see any action during the lockout. The 34-year-old veteran hasn't come close to returning to the form he displayed with the Boston Bruins (1997-02). However, he may still have a future in the big league in a backup role." (The Sports Forecaster 2005-06, p. 100)
