Gerald made his National Hockey League debut on November 11, 2005, at Philips Arena in Atlanta. Backing up Tampa Bay starter John Grahame, Coleman was summoned into the contest after two periods with his club down, 4-2. In the third period, Coleman stopped three of four shots (allowing a goal from Marian Hossa), but Tampa Bay could not reduce the eventual 5-2 margin.

Gerald became involved in ice hockey at the age of eight by watching his younger sister take figure skating lessons. He decided to try playing hockey, playing forward for two years before switching to goal.
Gerald was the first participant in the National Hockey League's Diversity Program to later be drafted in the league's entry draft, in 2003 by the Tampa Bay Lightning.
