WHAT OTHERS ARE SAYING:

"Welcome back, Freddy. After many seasons of exile in the IHL and the Canadian National team, Brathwaite returned to the NHL with a bang in 1998-99. He came all the way to become a No. 1 - No. 1A goaltender in Calgary. At 5-7, 170 pounds, Brathwaite relies mainly on his athleticism and his reflexes to stop the puck. His consistency level will determine how long he remains in the NHL. Brathwaite will enter training camp with a job to lose. With heir apparent Jean-Sebastien Giguere waiting in the wings, Brathwaite should enjoy the status while he still can." (The Sports Forecaster 1999-2000, p. 175)

"The well-liked goaltender finally got his due last season, becoming a bona fide No. 1 goalkeeper for the first time in his career. Brathwaite is a reflex-type goalie with an extremely athletic style. Until further notice, the Flames are now his team. Brathwaite should start 50 games. The Flames will need spectacular goaltending from him to make the playoffs." (The Sports Forecaster 2000-01, p. 167)

"Should either fill the starter or strong backup position in 2000-01. He shouldn't have to shoulder the same workload he has in recent seasons with Mike Vernon's presence in Calgary. Was able to follow up his brilliant 'out of nowhere' finish to the 1998-99 campaign with another strong showing. Though not a big goalie, he stole a few games for the Flames, as well as numerous hearts in Calgary. Has definitely established himself as an NHL goalie but the jury is out as to whether or not he's a legitimate No. 1 man." (The Sports Forecaster Online 2000-01)

"Will an NHL club finally deem Brathwaite their No. 1 goaltender? In Calgary, the Flames constantly went out of their way to hand the job to somebody else while the diminutive netminder was clearly the team's best option. A fan favorite, Brathwaite registered a goals-against average under three in all three of his seasons with the Flames and has 11 career shutouts in 178 games entering 2001-02. After a successful stint with Canada at the worlds last May, there is no longer any question that Freddy can play in the NHL. And be effective, too. It looks like Brathwaite will always have his work cut out for him if he desires to be a No. 1 man in the NHL. If he doesn't dislodge the promising Brent Johnson, his latest role will be to serve as a quality backup." (The Sports Forecaster 2001-02, p. 167)

"In his first season with the Blues, Brathwaite competed with, and eventually lost the No. 1 job to, Brent Johnson. Acquired in the Roman Turek deal with Calgary, Brathwaite set a career mark with his 2.24 goals-against average in 25 appearances. A smallish netminder, he is very quick and handles the puck extremely well. He's a very popular player wherever he goes. As he approaches 30 years of age, Brathwaite's chances of ever becoming a starting goalkeeper are starting to fade. Nevertheless, he remains one of the very best backups in the business." (The Sports Forecaster 2002-03, p. 161)
