INJURIES:
FIRSTS:
- Adam made his National Hockey League debut on October 15, 2005, at Madison Square Garden
in Manhattan, as the Atlanta Thrashers visited the New York Rangers. With Atlanta's top two
goaltenders, Kari Lehtonen and Mike
Dunham, both out with groin injuries, and with Michael Garnett
struggling the night before in Toronto, Adam got the call at the famed Garden. Two seasons removed
from the University of Denver, Berkhoel gave up a goal to Martin Rucinsky with 9:28 remaining
in the first period while stopping nine shots. It was the second period where the Rangers dominated,
however, as Jed Ortmeyer, Steve Rucchin and Michael Nylander tallied to extend
the New York lead to 4-0. Ilya Kovalchuk cut the score midway through the third, but Ville
Nieminen picked up the Rangers' fifth and final goal a few minutes later. Overall, Berkhoel
stopped twenty-four of twenty-nine shots in the Atlanta defeat.
- Adam's first League victory came on October 22, 2005, at Philips Arena in Atlanta when his
Thrashers defeated Martin Brodeur and the New Jersey Devils by a 4-3
margin. The Devils broke out to a 3-1 lead midway through the final period, but consecutive goals by
Ronald Petrovicky and Marc Savard tied the game before Petrovicky put the Thrashers
ahead by one. Berkhoel was especially sharp early, stopping 22 of 23 shots in the first two periods and
finishing with 32 saves overall. "It was awesome for the team", said Berkhoel. "It was special to get that
first win."
